  • I think it very important that we understand all of the facts of this matter. I understand that Dr. Churchill's comments were taken out of context and that his intents are not to hurt survivors' families. But something that must be looked into is his own Indian Tribe saying that he is not in fact a Native American after all! We must look into whether or not he is a Native American before we say that he is in the right. Lying about ancestral heritage is very important in this matter of racial discrimination. If he is in fact lying he is not one that we should champion!

    It is my understanding that Ward Chuurchill does in fact come from Native American ancestry. I do understand that this question has been raised in the past but am not sure who is making these allegations and how reliable they are...

    If someone could clarify this matter it would be helpful.

    I have taken a class with Ward Churchill at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The opportunity to study under Churchill was a profoundly rewarding experience and to say it was deeply educational is an understatement that I hesitate to type. There is no question that I will be a more culturally competent physician as a result of this experience. Indeed I am a significantly more cultural competant PERSON as a direct result of studying under him.

    While his comments have provoked impulsive outrage from some in the puplic, a close, thoughtful examination of his statement reveal, in my view, a tragically accurate analysis of the sociopolitical and cultural environment that led to the horrific events of 9/11.

    I am responding to the anonomous comment questioning Churchill's Native American Heritage. Personally I think this claim is equally outragous in its irrelevence as in its level of insult. I don't know where this claim originated, but it is plainly Slander/Smear Campaining 101. To quote Churchill, "Let's get a grip here."

  • I am the person that posted as an anonymous individual for the first post. I apologize for appearing to slam Dr. Churchill in that post. I just want to caution everyone about chamioning someone who might have lied about his Native American heritage. While I totally agree that Dr. Churchill should be fully protected by the first amendment like anyone else, I think that IF he is lying about his heritage he should not be championed as Martin Luther King Jr. or anyone else who has worked against inequality. I am NOT saying that he should be sensored or fired because of his statements in a scholarly writing. I am saying that I want to protect his free speech and whether or not the school administration agrees with him his job should be protected. I myself do not know all the facts about his heritage so I CANNOT say that he is a fraud or anything like that. I want to be clear on that point.
    I support the free speech and job security that Dr. Churchill should have just like every white male professor out there.

  • Hello. I don't think I have a blogger account, so let me introduce myself - I am Neal Bowen, and my email is bowenne@cwu.edu - out of Central Washington University.
    Personally the most chilling aspect of the furor surrounding Ward Churchill's writing is the transparent effort to stifle dissent. Whether we agree or not with the thrust of his writings; whether he is correct or not in his analysis; whether he was cautious of the feelings of the survivors or not are all fundamentally irrelevant to the public debate that is occuring.
    They are, of course, all central points in critically evaluating his proposal - but not in the attacks on the validity of and 'review' of his work. This process is based on a visceral reaction to his 'audacity' in publicly deviating from the dominant discourse on September 11 - and indeed from the agreed discourse on the group identity of the USA in the world.
    Yet, it is precisely this type of discourse - thoughtful exception taking - that is crucial to being able to develop public dialogue on issues of cetnral importance to us all.
    Thus, it seems to me, we should be clear about when we're discussing the controversy surrounding Churchill, and when we're discussing his ideas. The controversy is intended to intimidate and invalidate unpopular views. To that effort, I would hope, we are all opposed.

  • My name is Michael D'Andrea...

    I have carefully reviewed the content of the article that Ward Churchill wrote 3 years ago and viewing a video of his recent remarks related to the analogy of Nazis to the technocracts and other innocents who died in 911.

    A couple of conclusions I have made in terms of these comments and the situation in general as well as the comments made by various persons on the NIMC blog are as follows:

    #1: I do not support the use of violevence in the struggle for justice. In this light I am an advocate for the philosphy of M. Gandhi and ML King.

    #2: Although I am a strong advocate of non-violence I also understand how the foreign and military policies of the United States directly contribute to the murderous 911 attacks as many people in other countries have been and continue to be subjected to various forms of human suffering and genocide (human, physical, and cultural) that place them in the dubious position of having nothing to lose by getting in a jet plane and crashing it into buildings in an act of desperate and deplorable defiance against such unjust policies and practices.

    #3. I am deeply sympathetic to the innocent victims and their families of the cowardly 911 act of violence but also recognize that the technocratcs who worked in the WTC and pentagon... assisted in the maintainence of institutional policies and practices that lead to the killing, starving, and suffering of millions of persons around the world as the free market fundamentalism that Cornet West talks about in his newest book "Democracy Metters" clearly goes unbridled with a horrific impact on the millions of persons that Churchill talks about...

    I believe Jesus, Gandhi, and King would all agree that the injustices, pain, and killing that are fueled by the militarism and capitalism that underlie our government and way of life are not right from an ethical perspective... and will inevitably lead to further acts of violence in the US and other parts of the world that will predictably be implemented by desperate people....

    So yes... part of the debate needs to be directed to efforts to silence W. Churchill and others' right to dissent... but from a more comprehensive social-moral-political-psychological perspective... issues related to the insanity and injustices of US foreign policy, increasing militarism, and exploitive materialism need equal attention....

    Believing that all of this is indeed a psychological issue - one that includes the increasing level of insanity in our society - I suggest this broader debate needs the attention of all mental health professions in our nation...

For it is not consonant with the majesty of (Allah) the Most Merciful that He should beget a son: Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to (Allah) the Most Merciful as a servant.

    However, the misconception that Jesus is rejected does not follow from the reason given above. It is more precise to say that identifying Jesus as `the Son of God' is rejected. As a Messenger of Allah, Jesus is accorded the same honor that all the Messengers are given, as the following verse attests to (translation),

    [2:136] Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed to us and that which was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have surrendered. [Arabic "Muslimoon"]
